Top 5 Places to See (and photograph!) Kuala Lumpur's Skyline

Is a city is only as good as its horizon? Some of the largest cities in the world have instantly recognizable horizons and Kuala Lumpur, dealing with a picturesque Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower is definitely not as bad as we think. Although there are certainly many places in town with lovely views of the city, namely the numerous the hotel bars, not to forget the viewing platform at KL Tower, let's highlight a few lesser known areas, with great views of the KL sky. So here's a mini-guide on where to go for you to see the magical skyline of our beloved Kuala Lumpur unfold before your eyes.

1) Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated
Highway

This highway, also known as AKLEH, starts eastwards from Jalan Sultan Ismail, hitting areas like the Golden Triangle and Jalan Tun Razak before ending at Taman Ampang Utama.
The WOW factor: Offers a close view
of the Twin Towers and surrounding building like Menara Ambank and the area's numerous posh apartments.
Photographer Friendliness: At your own risk, especially with all the cars speeding by at 100km/hr. the best time would be early in the morning or during peak hours when traffic is slowe. whatever it is, make sure YOU'RE NOT BEHIND THE WHEEL!

2. Kenanga Point Condominium
This condominium is located just Off Jalan Hang Tuah. To be specific, aim for Block A of this condo lot.
The WOW Factor: Recommended by photographer, Evan Hwong, the view from Block A of Kenanga Point allows views of Mid Valley Megamall, Dataran Merdeka, Menara Maybank, KL Tower, Pudu Jail, Bukit Bintang, the Twin Towers, Berjaya Times Square, Jalan Tun Razak and Ampang.
Photographer Friendliness: Gaining access w
ould be the greatest hurdle. It definitely helps to know someone staying there.

3. Jalan Bukit Pantai

The perfect spot is just down the road from Pantai Towers
The WOW Factor: Walking down the steep road from the apartments, you'll see the skyline on the horizon. It's not a close view, but great because of how it appears to be sandwiched between the area's residential houses. It offers an uncommon but beautiful view of the skyline.
Photographer Friendliness: Hard to say because unlike AKLEH, it is possible to set up your equipment on the mound. You just have to pick a time when there are very few cars because if not, you're just plain inconsiderate, blocking the road like that.

4. Apartments around Bukit Ceylon area
The best would be Bidara Apartment or Somerset Seri Bukit Ceylon
The WOW Factor: Pretty good—you see the Twin Towers
, KL Tower, the Bukit Bintang area. It's pretty close to Bukit Ceylon after all.
Photographer Friendliness: The first test involves you actually gaining access to the rooftop. This pretty much depends on how well you sweet-talk the security guard.

5. Cheras Little Genting

Many have heard of this place but remain clueless as to how to get there. Try googling. there are several blogs giving good directions to here.
The WOW Factor: Very high. You get an almost bird's-eye view of Kuala Lumpur city centre, Petaling Jaya and also Genting Highlands. There are also restaurants perched on the hill where you can have dinner, overlooking the city's skyline. A romantic sight for sure, but it can get pretty crowded.
Photographer Friendliness: A nice high bird's eye view. Set up your tripod and camp out at the edge of the hill to catch the sunset, followed by the night sky. may get a little crowded at certain times.

Five simple and basic ways to improve your photography

Digital photography is a fun and interesting hobby. You can get great satisfaction from taking pictures and showing them to friends and family. Have you ever wished you could take better pictures? Have you ever looked at those amazing pictures on the web, and online and wondered how to get good at photography? Well these simple tips will help u to do just that. You might have read this repeatedly being mentioned in many sites but that is just because this is just what it is..the essential.

Practice Framing

Practice of framing your photos. You can do this any day at any time. You do not need to carry your camera with you. It's just that you need to be very observant when you travel around. Try to notice the things around you. Try to think of images in your head. What in the area would you include in the picture? Would you use the background or foreground? What would your focus be in the photo? What colors and textures you want to capture?

If you need help in framing an image in your mind, you can hold your right thumb to your left index finger and left thumb to your right index finger to create a frame for your photo. Yes, the classic 'movie-director' pose. Looking through this frame you get an idea of the picture you want to take. Have the mindset of a photographer.

Know your camera

Read your camera manual.yes, i repeat, READ YOUR CAMERA MANUAL. Knowing everything you can about your camera will help you take better photos. Learn more about modes of the camera. Learn more about what settings you can use in different situations, to obtain the desired images.

Take lots of pictures

If you do have your camera with you, take lots of pictures. With the invention of digital photography, photographers are not only limited by the number of images on a roll of film. Memory card can hold hundreds of images so it is no longer necessary to be frugal with your photos. Just go all out.

Take lots of pictures from all angles that you can image. Take photos closeup and at a distance. Experiment. The more you practice, the better you get.

Pay attention to the light

Light is very important in photography. Knowing how to get the best out of natural light to your advantage will help you get great pictures. In photography, the hour before sunset and the hour after sunrise are referred as the golden hour. These are the times of the day, when you get the most beautiful natural light. Having said that, you don't have to take pictures only during the golden hour though. When shooting in the middle of the day, try to use your flash to fill harsh shadows. Take pictures in the shade or on cloudy days. Clouds and shadows can act as diffusers of natural sunlight. Experiment with artificial indoor lighting as well.

Have fun

Photography is so fun so enjoy yourself. Do not put undue pressure on yourself to get the perfect shot. As you keep trying your photography skills would steadily get better.

Even the best photographers take many pictures to get that one great shot you see in magazines.
The more pictures you take the more good pictures you take too.

"PEOPLE AND PLACES" - An Exhibition.

3rd PHOTOMALAYSIA PHOTO EXHIBITION - "PEOPLE AND PLACES"

Do u guys know that PhotoMalaysia will be holding its 3rd Photo Exhibition at Nikon Centre, Berjaya Times Square. This Exhibition is curated by Mr. Alex Moh and En Azrul Abdullah. This Photo Exhibition represents the work done by PhotoMalaysia members.

Dates : 1st November to 12th December 2010
Time: from 10am to 10pm daily
Place: Nikon Centre, 1st floor, Berjaya Times Square.

Malaysia's largest photographic forum is staging it's third exhibition dealing with people and places. With such a large reach throught the fabric of MAlaysian Societym the documentation of faces and locations stretches through geographical and cultural borders to bring forth an all-encompassing visual smorgasboard.

A variety of photographic narratives is used to weave this exhibition together. in essence, that 'freedom to capture' has been left in the hands of each photographer to provide a very personal account or vision of his/her subject. Ultimately, the consummate relationship between the visuals and viwere is what will determine the motives of the photographer; or perhaps it may even offer a more experimental approach to a narrative previously unseen. Often predictable images and experimental images create a vague dichotomy in any exhibition, leaving the viewer to contemplate meaning or motive.

This exhibition seeks to bring closer the lines between spaces and people; as they are inevitably linked.

The date of the official opening ceremony will be announced later. All amateur and professional photographers and also photoenthusiasts, do make it a point to visit this event.

See You There!
